Great College Theme Party Ideas

Updated on August 19, 2016

Is There Anything More Fun Than a Theme Party?

Let's just be honest: theme parties, whether you're in college or not, area a complete blast! It's just fun to dress up as someone or something completely different from your everyday routine or out of character with who you are. (It's one of the things that makes Halloween so much fun every year.)

That said, choosing a theme for a party can often be pretty difficult. You want something that's going to be fun and get people excited. Also, it's never a bad idea to try something a little different than what's traditional. With that in mind, here are a few ideas for your next theme party.

The Classic Party Theme: Toga Party

I am a firmly believer in the adage that you can never go wrong with the classics.

That being the case, I start off with what has been a mainstay party theme on college campuses for years: the toga party.

Immortalized in the comedy classic National Lampoon's Animal House, toga parties are practically a right of passage. (Not to mention being just a heck of a lot of fun!)

If you only go to one party your entire college career, it should be a toga party. (Although, I'm hoping you make it to at least two parties while you're in college...)

Where's Waldo?

The '80s phenom is back! There was a time when it seemed the entire world was trying to find our where Waldo was, making the Where's Waldo series of books international bestsellers.

For those who don't remember, the premise of the books was simple: on each two-page spread, you had to find Waldo, who was somewhat hidden in plain sight amongst characters and scenery that closely mimicked his appearance.

The object of a Where's Waldo theme party, of course, is to do the something similar in the real world. Basically, a party with dozens of people all dressed exactly alike. (Women, of course, would come dressed as Waldo's gal-pal Wilma or her twin sister Wenda.) You can always liven things up by having guests go on a kind of scavenger hunt (e.g., "$10 to the first person to find the 'Waldo' wearing a green ribbon..."), but half the fun is meeting new people when you tap them on the shoulder after mistaking them for someone else.

Superheroes: A Great Party Theme

Everybody loves superheroes. Moreover, they're everywhere these days, thanks to the growing success of Marvel's comics-to-film empire, among other things. (Green Lantern notwithstanding...)

Thus, it's no surprise then that the concept of superheroes makes for a great theme party. (On a side note, if you want to stand out, you might want to avoid going for the most popular heroes.)

'60s and '70s Party

The '60s and '70s will always represent a time of tremendous social and cultural change in the U.S.

Moreover, that change was reflected in the clothing and attire of those respective periods.

So impactful were those times, that even now - almost 50 years later - we can immediately recognize the distinctive look of those eras.

That being the case, '60s and '70s theme parties will never go out of style (even if the fashions from those days actually did.)

Theme Party Summary

In short, theme parties are clearly a lot of fun. Much like Halloween (which is also a great time for a party), it gives people a chance to let their imaginations run free.

Needless, to say, there are hundreds of other themes you could use beyond those here: themes based on cartoon characters, historical figures, chosen professions, etc. The main thing is to just let people have fun with it. (And if you're not having fun with a theme party, it's a sure sign that you're probably doing something wrong.)
